Honey is healthier than white sugar!
Unfortunately all sugars are not better than refined white sugar. Brown sugar, Agave syrup or honey will be broken down into glucose and enter our bloodstream to be used as energy by our cells when needed and stored as fat if the energy household is full. The only difference lies in the amount of minerals and impurity.
White sugar has no nutrients and provides a lot of carbohydrates. Everyone should watch out for hidden sugars in drinks like soda or food.
“sugar-free” means no sugar inside!
It can be very misleading to see “sugar free” on one product on a supermarket shelf. In most cases the sign “sugar-free” does not mean that it is free of sugar. However it will be free of saccharose, which is white sugar or sugar cane. Other forms of sugar mainly used in a biochemical context are:
- Glucose
- Fructose
- Maltose
- Inverted sugar
- Glucose syrup
- Dextrose
- Malto dextrin
- Fructose syrup ( starch sugar)
- Caramel sugar syrup
- Vanillin sugar

Sometimes it doesn’t seem to be easy to find out if a product actually contains sugar in one way or another. Products can be labeled as “sugar free” even though they contain starch sugar for example. It is a question of the law and the definition of what is considered as sugar by law. From a chemical perspective starch consists of glucose, which is the basic component of saccharose, “the true sugar”.
As a simple rule-of- thumb,you should always have a look at the ingredients list of one product. Words ending with “-ose” are automatically a form of sugar.
Do they differ in calories or is any of these sugars healthier for the teeth? The answer is no. All forms of sugar provide the same amount of energy and are equally damaging for the teeth,because mouth germs are processing sugar to corrosive acids.
Sugar leads to Diabetes mellitus!
Now the body needs insulin to transport sugar through the blood into the cells. If the body is producing no insulin ( diabetes type I) or not enough insulin (diabetes type II), the messenger substance insulin is dysfunctional. In this case patients need medication to obtain a constant blood sugar level. Consuming sugar does not trigger diabetes, but consuming a high amount of sugar leads to a high energy intake because sugar contains a lot of carbohydrates. A higher energy absorption than consumption will lead to obesity eventually, which affects the insulin action and promotes the emergence of diabetes. The main risk factors for diabetes II are obesity, abdominal obesity, physical idleness and family tendencies. To forgo fruits or sugar in other forms is not necessary to maintain a healthy body weight! Exercising is!
